The author in his text attempts to interpret the problem of “the family” as it is found, in many different forms, in the work of Ricoeur. After a historical investigation (especially of Hegel), he emphasises the meaning which family-belonging has for the development of the individual, but at the same time he also attempts to place the problem into a wider social context. In this connection he also analyses questions which are very closely connected with the problem of the family: the question of temporality and its relation to narration. On the basis of these themes the author extracts a unified problematic from Ricoeur’s many-sided work – a problematic which at first sight does not seem to play a very significant role.
