Artykuł prezentuje kierunki rozwoju współczesnych miast, które wpisują się w powszechnie stosowaną terminologię miast zrównoważonych (sustainable) czy tzw. miast smart. Władze samorządowe niejednokrotnie deklarowały obranie takiej właśnie drogi rozwoju. Pozostaje jednak pytanie, czy realizowane działania w polskich miastach są zgodne z kryteriami zrównoważonego rozwoju. Artykuł prezentuje kluczowe aspekty rozwoju dla współczesnych miast w Polsce. Miasta powinny przede wszystkim stwarzać mieszkańcom szansę kreatywnego rozwoju i dostarczać bodźce do oryginalnego kształtowania nowych przestrzeni miejskich oraz realizowanych w nich funkcji społeczno- -gospodarczych. W referacie podkreślona została rola obywateli w reorientacji kierunków rozwoju miast w Polsce.

The paper presents the directions of development of the modern cities that form part of a common terminology of sustainable or smart cities. Local authorities often declare the undertaking of this way of development. A question is if works realized in the Polish cities are consistent with the basic criteria of sustainability. The paper presents in a synthetic way the key aspects of development of modern cities in Poland. However it does not state which new sectors of the economy should be designed in cities. The cities should, in fact, only create the chances for creative development and provide its residents with incentives to originally shape a new urban spaces and socio-economic features. The paper accents the role of the citizens in the process of reorientation of the directions of development of the cities in Poland.
