The article examines intercultural relations between Ruthenians and Jews in the work of the Greek Catholic priest Anatolyi Kralytskyi (1835, Vyshny Chabyny – 1894, Mukachevo). Literary activity of this author was connected with the place of his birth in Slovakia, and later for a long time with Ukraine, at the time when both these territories were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The subject of our research is the relationship between the Jewish and Catholic communities, presented by Kralytskyi in the story „Piyavitsa“ (1869). This text, like many other contemporary works on a similar topic, was probably meant to serve as educationally motivated reading, as a result of which it absorbed a whole complex of stereotypes about Jews. Our goal is, with the help of the literary and historical method, to find out the reason for such a depiction of the representatives of the Jewish minority and to reflect on the extent to which this literary model was based on the real life events.
