THE QUESTION OF THE CONFLICT BETWEEN VALUES

The problem of conflicting values had already been noted in antiquity and various attempts were made to solve it. Both one’s perspective on and one’s solution to this problem depend on how values are to be understood (pragmatically, or as ideas), on how the world of values is divided up (dichotomically or scalarly), and on whether one accepts a permanent hierarchy of values. The conflict looks different when it occurs between domains of values and when it occurs within one domain, between more specific values. Additional complications arise when the dimension of time is considered, as well as when we look into relating the value to humans seen either as individuals, or a collective, or a species. Another type of conflict that can occur is that between the intentions and the consequences.
