The paper is dealing with the character of J. I. Bajza, who is known for the authorship of the first Slovak novel and the first attempt to codify the Slovak language before Bernolák. Based on the collection of anecdotes, riddles and humoristic tales written by Bajza, named “Veselé účinky a rčení”, the author provides insight into the significance of Bajza ś work for the folkloric research. The collection includes the oldest texts of humoristic nature and riddles thus bringing forth records, which evidence the existence of multiple subjects in Slovak narrative culture. The paper explains the connection between anecdotes, riddles in said collection and folk narrative culture between the borders of literature and folklore.
