The article analyzes major work of German linguist Manfred Görlach – his 3-volume set dealing with Anglicisms in 16 European national languages. It describes the history of originating and creation of his project and compares it with similar projects in the past. Further, it shows the structure of the Dictionary and focuses on its microstructure by exploring one particular lemma. Subsequently, the advantages and disadvantages are compared. Particular attention is paid to Anglicism itself. From comparisons with how other linguists define the term, it results that Görlach redefines the concept of Anglicism, respectively adapts it to current needs and conditions. The article continues by presenting the structure of English in Europe, the accompanying volume to the Dictionary which comprises 16 equally structured studies from the contributors about the influence of English in their respective national languages from the point of view of history, pronunciation, spelling, morphology, semantics, usage, future perspectives and research. Follows a comparison of two chapters – Italian and Spanish – to illustrate more closely their structure and show the possibilities of comparative analysis that the book offers.
