The paper looks into the way the various translators of Edgar Allan Poe‟s fiction into Romanian dealt with a figure of speech (or of thought) Poe seems to have been especially fond of: the litotes. Romanian versions spanning 55 years (1957-2012) are examined with a view to pinpointing whether litotes are interpreted as having to do with intensification or attenuation.
