Although the guidelines for the renewal of antiquity in the Renaissance were mainly written down in central Italy, other regions went their own ways. In particular, the Republic of Venice tended to emphasize its special status. Our article treats how this trend has impacted on High Renaissance architectural theory. It turns out that the ancient buildings that were preserved in the Venetian sovereign territory, most notably the Arena of Verona, constituted for the Venetians a second peak of ancient architecture, along with the ruins in Rome, that they were held up as the earliest evidence of Italian architecture, and that Palladio and Scamozzi in them, along with the Roman antiquities, based their doctrines on the orders of columns, moulding the Tuscan order from their model. The disparaging view on the ancient buildings in the Venetian territory that Serlio provided from the values of Roman classicism encountered a polemical backlash.
