The study focuses on the identification of social actors currently engaged in activities aimed at socio-cultural and economic development in the Poloniny region. It describes what these social actors consider to be a regional and local ‘traditional’ craft, activity or product, and also addresses the question of (1) which declared local traditions have been preserved as ancestral heritage from previous generations through long-term transmission and are still part of the living heritage, and (2) which of the extinct cultural traditions local actors are trying to revive. It also provides a critical reflection on the way in which these actors are trying to revive regional and local ‘traditional’ elements and the extent to which these are transformed or invented traditions. This study also aims to highlight the links between tourism and the presentation of these ‘traditional’ elements as a part of the cultural heritage of the region and to record the initiatives of various organisations, associations or individuals who, through their activities, seek to strengthen the future socio-cultural and economic capital of the region. The study presents the results of qualitative research carried out in the Poloniny region using ethnographic interview and participant observation methods and compares them with the ethnographic data of some Slovak ethnographers who have carried out research of this area in the past.
