The study explores the 50-year dynamic of environmental risk perceptions in Slovenia, examining shifts in public attitudes towards environmental threats from 1973 to 2023. The motivation for this research stems from the importance of understanding how environmental concerns evolve over time, influenced by various socio-political and environmental factors. The primary objective of this research is to identify and explain the factors that have shaped public perceptions of environmental threats in Slovenia over a period of five decades. Specifically, the study aims to analyse the influence of objective environmental conditions, major environmental disasters, political contexts, and media coverage on public perceptions. The research employs a cross-time analysis of data from the Slovenian Public Opinion (SPO) surveys, focusing on fourteen measurement points between 1973 and 2023. The indicators provide insights into public perceptions of various environmental threats, including air pollution, water pollution, forest decay, nuclear power, and climate change. Major environmental disasters, such as Chernobyl in 1986 and severe floods in 2023, had a profound impact on public perceptions, leading to sharp increases in environmental concern. The study highlights the complex relationship between short-term public concern and long-term environmental policy outcomes, indicating a need for policymakers to navigate these dynamics carefully.
