The name of Piłsudski is inextricably tied with the restitution of independence by Poland. His legend during the Second Polish Republic was meant to unite the Polish society around this idea. Public ceremonies he took part in personally, official celebrations of his name day or anniversaries of events in which he played a crucial role, all served this purpose. Not only artists, fascinated by his personality spontaneously helped to create this legend, but also central and local administration, and military authorities, grateful for his role as the Supreme Commander during the victorious war against soviet Russia. His death only resulted in the legend growing even larger. The Lublin region, which was very close to Piłsudski's heart after the warm welcome his legionaries received there in 1915, contributed significantly to the creation of his legend both during official visits during the twenties, and later by official celebrations of his name day, anniversaries of the Battle of Warsaw, departure of the First Cadre Company, restitution of independence, and after his death, also that date. The setting of ceremonies, occasional publications, monuments, public buildings named after him - all had one purpose: binding the name of Piłsudski with the idea of independence, which was supposed to be a sort of creation myth.
