Stalinist ideology grew stronger in the Czech lands between 1945 and 1948. At this time, a time of radical social change, Catholic intellectuals were on the one hand trying to defend the continuity of millennia of Christianity, and on the other hand, they had to cope with contemporary thought impulses that responded to the crisis of post-war Europe. In the 1930s, Catholic intellectuals drew on the ideas of Léon Bloy and especially Jacques Maritain, but after the war, thinkers who followed Thomas Aquinas had to come to terms with French existentialism (Jean-Paul Sartre), which influenced especially the younger generation. The middle generation of Catholics (Jan Čep, Dominik Pecka, Aloys Skoumal, etc.) was therefore aware that they had to seriously address the impulses offered by the philosophy of existence in response to the crisis of spiritual values in Europe. We have decided to examine this situation more closely through the transformations of four editions of the magazine Vyšehrad, which was published from autumn 1945 to December 1948 (after which it was banned). We want to find out how different inspirations and ideological pressures influenced the relations between the middle and young generation of Catholic intellectuals.
