One of the aims of a new history of education is the analysis of the students‘ social structure, the determination of their background, and the integration of these findings into a wider socio-cultural, political and economical development within a given society or country. The case study of the first Czech grammar school in Brno, one of the two oldest Grammar schools in Moravia, presents the results of such an investigation in comparison with similar research done on other secondary schools in Moravia as well as in Bohemia. During a long period of nearly seventy years, which were crucial for the formation of a modern society, changes and developmental trends can be observed not only in the student body, but also in the entire society.
