The text is a review of the catalogue of paintings from the collection of Stanisław August Poniatowski, the last king of Poland. The catalogue, a monumental and beautifully published elaboration by D. Juszczak and H. Małachowicz, is the first such comprehensive and detailed description of the current state of Stanisław August’s collection of paintings from his private residence, Royal Łazienki. In a clear way, based on current knowledge and contemporary European literature, included in a comprehensive bibliography, the authors have verified the information (which was very frequently thoughtlessly repeated from 19th-century publications) on individual objects from the collection housed today at the Royal Łazienki Museum. This catalogue may serve as the basis for further analyses of the published material, as well as for research on the collection’s character and the collecting activity of King Stanisław August. This review assesses the authors’ introduction and the accuracy of each object’s description. Some minor mistakes have also been indicated.
