Brothers Hospitallers of St John of God (Polish: bonifratrzy) came to Poland in 1609, and to Warsaw in 1650. Initially they established a convent at Leszno, later - near the present Saski Park. In 1726 they built a new church and convent in the street which was later named after them (Bonifraterska Street). In 1757 a hospital was erected along the street next to the church. The architect was Jakub Fontana. The Grand Hall of the hospital was furnished with 24 large richly-decorated oak beds, founded by Prince August Czartoryski. They are the subject of the article. The beds were arranged in two rows along the walls, at equal intervals. The non-ornamented backs of the headboards faced the wall. The footboards, facing the Hall, had panels divided with ornamental stripes and topped with busts of saints. Solid, moulded posts upheld draped canopies. At each bed there was a small case with a pot inside, used as a spittoon.
