The author attempts to morally justify humanitarian intervention, drawing on a conceptual analysis of the inner unity of rights and duties. His starting point is the moral limiting of the inner sovereignity of states by universally-valid basic human rights, and he analyses the various ways of justifying this limit in western political philosophy. On this basis of this discussion, he justifies the universal duty of defending basic human rights in the international community, he answers various objections to this universal duty, and he criticises the prevailing practice of contemporary states.
