In the present study the Czech toponyms consisting of the component *třěb- are analyzed from the point of view of internal Czech toponymical models. In most of them the hypocoristica shortened from the binary personal names or their derivatives are identified. The remaining place names are derived from appelatives which are usually formed from the Common Slavic verb *terbiti ‚to clear (a forest); to purge‘. Finally the attempt to connect it with the Indo-European etymon *treb- ‚to live, settle; beam; house, hut‘ is discussed.
