During the inter-war period, a number of more or less ambitious proposals for the “European idea” were presented. This idea meant different levels and ways of integration for different authors. The Czechoslovak political and economic elites did not fail to get involved and developed their own plans. The main aim of this article is to present one of these personalities, Rudolf Hotowetz (1865–1945). Rudolf Hotowetz was one of the most important Czechoslovak economists, so the focus is on analysing his economic views on foreign trade policy in the period from the establishment of Czechoslovakia to the origin of his idea of the United States of Europe. His entire professional career and interest activities are also taken into consideration. As no egodocuments of Hotowetz from this period have survived, his own professional speaking activities have been an important source of work.
