For researchers concerned with social memory photographs are an extremely valuable material for study. The article attempts to bring forth iconographic sources of contemporary visual culture within the context of postmemory. Photographs of extermination are an especially unique type of pictures which act as a vehicle for social memory. They require that the context of their narration be interpreted; in the educational sense they make interpersonal communication in the name of learning the truth about the past possible. Postmemory is a category which explains and gives value to the interpretation of familial iconographic sources, which does not dictate or reduce but, by promoting reflection, provides knowledge, clarifies and leads to a deeper understanding. I have presented an educational activity which teaches how to look “through” the photographs at the past of a local community.
