The aim of the article is to present a study about socioeconomic stratification in the school system conducted in Cracow in 2011–2012. The data come from statistics on local education system, individual indepth interviews with school masters and teachers from public and private lowersecondary schools as well as politician representing the local government. Special attention was paid to school recruitment policies, unequal access to educaion for students from different backgrounds, and the local government strategy for education. The study found that school selection practices and school competition lead to cream skimming. The best schools select the best candidates from affluent and well educated families. At the same time schools with poor reputation attract students from poor and working class families. They have much problems with school violence and students motivation for learning. The strategy for education introduced by the local government is to reduce expenditures for education by implementing school voucher scheme, closing down small schools and pay off teachers working in those schools. The aim of the local government is not to eliminate the problem of selection and segregation in the public education system.
