Since the 70s of last century, the number of prisoners in the US increases. This is not due to an increase in crime – at the same time statistics indicate a decline. America lives the illusion that imprisonment is the cure for crime. The majority of funds from the budget, rather than on education, welfare and health, is aimed at the gigantic expansion of the prison. Changed is legislation under which an increasing number of criminals takes longer and longer prison sentences for an ever wider range of offenses. Support the number of new prisoners, consuming more costs, both financial and social. Sobering comes quite late, because until 2011, when the financial system of California, a state that expanded its prisons perhaps most of all the US states, refracted. Since then, the prison population of the United States begins to slightly decrease.
