The objective of this theoretical article is the review of world literature on the subject of a new trend in expatriation—self–initiated expatriation (SIE). Existing research and studies served as the basis for identifying the differences between the assigned and self–initiated expatriate, and the presentation of criteria defining SIE. Given the increasing demand of corporations for this group of international employees, the paper also indicates the specificity of managing such employees, which determines the differences in international management of human resources. Key words: international mobility, expatriation, self–initiated expatriate
