W kontekście dyskursu na temat powieści historycznej, ukazującej usytuowanie jednostki w procesach historycznych, omówiono w artykule trzy najnowsze powieści szwajcarskich autorek, opisujące życie trzech wyjątkowo utalentowanych kobiet w trzech różnych epokach. W powieści Gabrielle Alioth „Der prüfende Blick” narrator podejmuje próbę rekonstrukcji życia osiemnastowiecznej malarki Angeliki Kauffmann i dochodzi do wniosku, że o jej życiu i twórczości artystycznej decydowali zawsze kontrolujący ją mężczyźni: ojciec, mąż, jej nauczyciele i sponsorzy. Powieść Anity Siegfried „Die Schatten ferner Jahre”, rozgrywająca się w XIX wieku, ukazuje z kolei życie córki Lorda Byrona – Ady, niezwykle uzdolnionej w dziedzinie matematyki i poezji. W kontraście wobec innych postaci kobiecych, pojawiających się w tle jej historii, widoczne jest jednak, że mogła ona realizować swe naukowe ambicje jedynie dzięki swej wysokiej pozycji społecznej. Natomiast Eveline Hasler koncentruje się w swej powieści „Stein bedeutet Liebe. Regina Ullmann und Otto Gross” na życiu tworzącej na początku XX wieku szwajcarskiej pisarki Reginy Ullmann, na jej związku ze słynnym psychoterapeutą oraz jej przyjaźni z R. M. Rilkem, który jako jedyny rzeczywiście ją rozumiał i wspierał. Powieści te ukazują zatem trzy utalentowane kobiety, których artystyczna bądź naukowa kariera uzależniona była od ich rodziców i ważnych dla nich mężczyzn. Żadna z nich nie podjęła próby protestu przeciw ograniczającym je konwencjom społecznym, jednakże z jednego zasadniczego powodu – braku odpowiednich wzorców.

This article discusses how three German-Swiss women authors writing in the twenty-first century portray within the framework of the novel three notable creative women living, respectively, in the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The social constraints of each era, determined by male-dominated class structures, are shown impacting on the individual life and on the development of inborn talent, whether it be for painting (Angelica Kauffmann in “Der prüfende Blick” by Gabrielle Alioth), for mathematics (Ada Byron in “Die Schatten ferner Jahre” by Anita Siegfried) or for writing (Regina Ullmann in “Stein bedeutet Liebe” by Eveline Hasler). In times of transition – the rise of the bourgeoisie and the advent of the French Revolution in the second half of the eighteenth century, the rapid advance of technology in the middle of the nineteenth century and the movements for change in social attitudes at the beginning of the twentieth century – the contemporary perception of the role of women is shown to be highly resistant to change and the recognition of the talent of the central female figure to be due to fortuitous circumstances.
