Intermediary groups represent an implementation of the principle of subsidiarity that argues for organizations intermediary between the human person and the more powerful public authority. They have the effect of protecting the human person from a heavy-handed public authority, and – by establishing themselves closer to that person – are able to provide opportunities for that person to participate in economic decision-making. In a personalist economy, public authorities intervene only when the Many private individuals and the One private-group are unable to function effectively. While economic freedom is the most important characteristic of a personalist economy, intermediary groups are its distinguishing characteristic. We found anecdotal evidence of intermediary groups operating in the United States in the form of cooperatives and supra-firm alliances. We also found support for private group decision-making that reconciles the good of the individual and the common good through such groups expressed by Pius XI, Joseph Schumpeter, Bernard Dempsey, Joseph Becker, William Waters, and John Paul II. Intermediary groups are a natural expression of the sociality of human beings, who are confronted by problems they cannot resolve by acting alone. Establishing these groups in economic affairs is instinctive in that they call for the same problem-solving skills, that are necessary for any individual economic enterprise to operate successfully. Because they are organized by the principle of cooperation, mainstream economics dismisses them, because cooperation always is collusive. It’s time to recognize that there is a third way for organizing economic affairs that offers a viable option to the individualism of a market economy and the collectivism of a command economy.

Grupy pośredniczące stanowią realizację zasady subsydiarności, która przemawia za organizacjami pośredniczącymi między osobą ludzką a silniejszą władzą publiczną. Mają one wpływ na ochronę osoby ludzkiej przed ciężką ręką organów publicznych, a poprzez zbliżenie się do tej osoby są w stanie umożliwić jej uczestnictwo w podejmowaniu decyzji gospodarczych. W gospodarce personalistycznej władze publiczne interweniują tylko wtedy, gdy Wiele osób prywatnych i Jedna grupa prywatna nie są w stanie skutecznie funkcjonować. Podczas gdy wolność ekonomiczna jest najważniejszą cechą gospodarki personalistycznej, jej cechą wyróżniającą są grupy pośredniczące. Odnaleźć można niepotwierdzone dowody na istnienie grup pośredniczących działających w Stanach Zjednoczonych w formie spółdzielni i sojuszy ponadnazwiązkowych. Znaleźliśmy także poparcie dla podejmowania decyzji przez grupę prywatną, która godzi dobro jednostki z dobrem wspólnym za pośrednictwem takich właśnie grup, wyrażane przez Piusa XI, Josepha Schumpetera, Bernarda Dempseya, Josepha Beckera, Williama Watersa i Jana Pawła II. Grupy pośredniczące są naturalnym wyrazem społecznej tożsamości ludzi, którzy stają w obliczu problemów, których nie są w stanie rozwiązać samodzielnie. Ustanowienie tych grup w sprawach gospodarczych jest instynktowne, ponieważ wymagają one tych samych umiejętności rozwiązywania problemów, jakie są niezbędne, by jakiekolwiek przedsiębiorstwo mogło z powodzeniem funkcjonować. Ponieważ są one zorganizowane według zasady współpracy, ekonomia głównego nurtu odrzuca je, gdyż współpraca zawsze ma charakter umowny. Czas uznać, że istnieje trzeci sposób organizowania spraw gospodarczych, który oferuje realną alternatywę zarówno dla indywidualizmu gospodarki rynkowej, jak i kolektywizmu gospodarki nakazowej.
