Lessons from Modernity are sought in the early work of Raul Brandão, with particular reference to the construction of the “interior monologue” as “meditation” and “soliloquy”, as well as the stream of consciousness, which, especially in A Farsa and Humus, expresses a mental speech approximate to the “nouveau roman”. Because of the dismantling of the traditional intrigue through the creation of a symbolic space and the dilution of the characters in a narrative magma, in which Time becomes the driving force for the “action”, Raul Brandão’s work could be regarded as a “nouveau roman” avant la lettre: the monologues oscillate between remembrance and project, the real and the imaginary, and so anticipate James Joyceʼs Ulysses, which represents the world in its essentiality; under the aegis of Modernity, there is an interruption of the gender protocols of the novel.
