The purpose of this paper is to identify and define the characteristic features of non-free (set) phrases. Following I. Mel’čuk’s theory, we shall interpret such structures as a type of phraseme. The non-free phrases convey a certain meaning thanks to their unique configuration of segmental and supra-segmental elements. Segmental elements include lexemic variables, i.e. lexemes interchangeable in a given type of phraseme, which may take different inflectional forms within the same expression, cf. skandal nad skandale, owoc nad owoce, pieśń nad pieśniami, and lexemic stables, i.e. grammatical elements such as prepositions or conjunctions, cf. nad. Supra-segmental elements include sentence stress and intonation and other prosodic features. Information presented in this paper concerning the internal structure and syntax of non-free phrases can be used in order to facilitate identifying such phrases in Polish texts, allowing us to have a clearer idea on the range and number of these structures in contemporary Polish.
