The understanding and celebration of the Sacrament of the Sick have experienced several changes through the ages. On of the results of that state was the limitation of its use only to the dying people. Therefore the reform undertaken after the Second Vatican Council pointed at the need of the restoration of the ancient practice to give the sacrament also to the sick people. This study concerns the phase of redaction of the new Ritual of the Sacrament of the Sick. The author discusses one by one the questions on theology, sacramental form and matter, subject and administrator of the Sacrament.

Zarówno obradom soborowym, jak też redakcyjnym pracom nad nowymi obrzędami sakramentu namaszczenia chorych przyświecał in genere jeden zasadniczy cel: przywrócić ten sakrament jego „historycznie” prawowitemu „właścicielowi”, czyli człowiekowi poważnie choremu, a nie jak dotąd, wyłącznie umierającemu. Powyższe, kategoryczne stwierdzenie z pewnością zostanie wzmocnione dwiema kolejnymi prelekcjami sympozjum: ukazaniem jego teologicznego sensu oraz potrzebą reorientacji dotychczasowej pragmatyki pastoralnej odnośnie do tego sakramentu.
