In Poland celebrations of the International Historical Monuments Protection Day entail a presentation of monuments of particular significance for world heritage as well as awarding persons contributing to the protection of the monuments and the social popularisation of the idea (the prize of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers). The most recent laureates were Maria and Andrzej Szypowscy, authors of numerous initiatives and campaigns conducted for the sake of the protection of universally acclaimed monuments. The International Historical Monuments Protection Day is also an excellent occasion for solving competitions associated with a widely comprehended protection of historical monuments. The “Cherished Monument” competition distinguished 16 objects which had regained their former splendour thanks to the endeavours of caretakers and owners: parishes, municipal offices, firms, and private persons. The “For the protection of historical monuments” golden badges granted by the Minister of Culture were presented to police officers, border guards and customs officers for their special efforts in combating crimes perpetrated against cultural property. The Rev. Janusz Stanisław Pasierb award, established by the Main Board of the Association of Conservators of Historical Monuments, was granted to Prof. Wiktor Zin for his activity involving the protection and conservation of historical monuments (individual prize), to Rev. Waldemar Pytel and Rev. Roman Kluz, vicars of Protestant parishes in Świdnica and Jawor, and to Ulrich Schaff, architect and conservator. Awards and distinctions in a competition held by the General Conservator of Historical Monuments and the Association of Conservators of Historical Monuments were presented to students and young researchers for best scientific studies, projects and popularisation publications dealing with the protection of historical monuments, museum sciences and historical garden premises. The Botanical Garden in Warsaw and the St. John the Baptist Metropolitan Seminary were awarded for their protection of historical gardens. The ceremony took place at the Museum Palace in Wilanów.
