The Battle of Liw on 14 and 15 April 1831 brought an end to several days of fighting to assume control over bridges on the Liwiec River. The battle generated substantial losses for both Polish and Russian armies, and at least 1500 soldiers were killed, wounded or captured by the enemy. Polish infantry troops stormed the bridges under heavy fire from the enemy’s cannons and rifles. Polish general Umiński’s resolve to regain control of the bridges multiplied the insurgents’ losses which were not compensated by the Polish cavalry’s victory in the battle of Jarnice. Polish commanders were unable to make rational decisions due to the lack of detailed information about the enemy’s forces and plans. Soldiers paid for their mistakes in blood.
