Based on research conducted in Malopolska, the paper evaluates irregularities that occur during the road transport of commodities. The data were gathered on the basis of inspections done in the years 2005 to 2008. The efficiency of supervision and control of road transport is very important in light of the constantly increasing use of such transport. The most common irregularities are a failure to take breaks from driving. The second group is the failure to follow regulations on the use of devices that record vehicle speed and periods of motion and inactivity. The third group comprises defects in documentation considered indispensable in transportation. In 2008, up to 96% of all of the irregularities occurred in those three groups. The main reasons for these irregularities can be traced to the desire to maximise income by the owners of companies and drivers responsible for the transport of commodities. During the research period, we observed a decrease in the total number of offences.
