The Museum of Independence houses sources relating to Poles in Manchuria. They differ in nature and include photographs, documents and occasional prints; the library collection includes newspapers and periodicals (Niepodległość, Tygodnik Polski) as well as books from the early 20th century (among them Polacy na Dalekim Wschodzie [Poles in the Far East] by Kazimierz Grochowski). The material collected in the Museum documents various aspects of the life of Poles; it illustrates the functioning of Polish public institutions, associations and societies. The documents present people who rendered great service to the Polish community in Harbin (e.g. K. Grochowski, Fr. Paweł Chodniewicz, teachers from Polish schools) as well as ordinary Poles who tried to maintain their Polishness and Polish culture in far-away Manchuria (e.g. members of the “Gospoda Polska” Society). Items associated with the life of Poles in Manchuria are dispersed, and it would be perhaps worth gathering the information about museum holdings in various parts of the country and to create an up-to-date, complete register that would greatly facilitate research and inspire many interesting articles.
