Filozoficzne poglądy mistrza Dawida z Dinant, jednego z pierwszych łacińskich egzegetów pism przyrodoznawczych Arystotelesa ze schyłku XII i z początków XIII wieku, zostały potępione przez Synod Paryski w r. 1210 i ponownie w r. 1215 przez papieskiego legata Roberta z Courçon. Głównym powodem potępienia był głoszony przez Dawida materialistyczny panteizm. Potępienia te zabraniały pod karą ekskomuniki lekturę i posiadanie pism tegoż autora, nakazywały ich konfiskatę i spalenie. Francuski uczony, G. Théry, częściowo zrekonstruował poglądy Dawida w oparciu o cytaty z jego pism, jakie przekazał w swoich dziełach Albert Wielki i kilku innych autorów średniowiecznych (m. in. Tomasz z Akwinu). Polski historyk nauk, Aleksander Birkenmajer, odkrył i zidentyfikował anonimowe fragmenty dzieł Dawida w średniowiecznych rękopisach, zachowanych w bibliotekach Gandawy (BU 5), Oksfordu (Bodl. Libr. Digby 67), Paryża (BnF lat. 15453) i Wiednia (ÖNB 4753). Fragmenty te wydał krytycznie uczeń A. Birkenmajera, ks. prof. Marian Kurdziałek. Jego edycja David[is] de Dinanto Quaternulorum fragmenta i analiza tekstów ukazała w nowym świetle początki recepcji dzieł Arystotelesa w kręgu kultury łacińskiej w okresie Średniowiecza i służyła przez prawie pół wieku jako najważniejsze źródło wiedzy o mistrzu Dawidzie i jego poglądach. Dociekania naukowe ks. Kurdziałka, dotyczący Dawida, były punktem wyjścia do dalszych badań, podjętych przez B. Lawn’a, E. Maccagnolo, G. Vuillemin-Diem i E. Casadei, uwieńczonych odnalezieniem i identyfikacją dalszych dzieł Dinatczyka oraz krytyczną edycją wszystkich jego dotychczas znanych tekstów (E. Casadei, 2008). Najnowsze studia nad Dawidem z Dinant potwierdziły niemalże w całej rozciągłości ustalenia ks. Kurdziałka dotyczące tego kompleksu i obaliły próbę ich częściowej dekonstrukcji i krytyki.

Philosophical ideas of David of Dinant were condemned by the Paris synod in 1210, which were confirmed in 1215 by Cardinal Robert Courçon, papal legate. The main reason of this condem- nations was the David of Dinant’s materialistic pantheism. In consequence reading and owning the David of Dinant’s works became punishable by excommunication. A French scholar G. Théry partially developed his ideas according to excerptions of his works largely derived from Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas and others. A Polish historian Aleksander Birkenmajer found in Ghent (BU 5), Oxford (Bodl. Libr. Digby 67), Paris (BnF lat. 15453) and Wien (ÖNB 4753) libraries the medieval manuscripts containing some fragments of the David of Dinant’s works. Rev. Marian Kurdziałek, a follower of A. Birkenmajer, as the author of the critical edition of David[is] de Dinanto Quaternulorum presented in a new context the early days of the Aristotle’s works reception into Latin culture. Quaternulorum fragmenta edited by M. Kurdziałek served for almost fifty years as an important source of knowledge on David of Dinant. Nowadays, Rev. M. Kurdziałek’s findings are almost fully acknowledged by the contemporary researchers of David of Dinant’s thought.
