Hermit’s Confession includes 36 sins which can be committed through words. Such a list made it possible to reconstruct the system of values regulating the utterances of the Old Believers. It was a sin for them to speak too much and too loud. Excessively emotional words (both positive and negative) made the utterance sinful as well. Qualitative sins included: vulgar speech, telling lies, and expressing negative emotions towards another man. Among lies, two groups were especially marked: perjury under oath and defamation
