The article presents the issue of the process of foreign language teaching in relation to the Polish educational reality. The contemporary glottodidactic research focuses on the learner, their individual characteristics and the influence of the environment. The researchers agree on the necessity of placing the learner, organizing an appropriate learning environment and taking into consideration their needs and opportunities in the centre of the didactic process. It is worth considering how the postulate of the individualization is implemented in Polish institutions. The issues discussed in the first part of the text concern the description of individualisation and didactic possibilities of its implementation in school, first of all by means of internal differentiation, including, for instance, the differentiation of objectives, contents and the organization of the lesson. The key element taken into consideration is the analysis of the binding legal regulations and selected research results concerning foreign language teaching in the context of individual features, the learner's predispositions as well as particular needs and educational abilities.
