W niniejszym tekście podejmuję próbę rekonstrukcji kryteriów przyjmowania do Harvard University w perspektywie historycznej. W sposób szczególny interesuje mnie ewolucja mechanizmu zamykania/otwierania dostępu do studiowania w tej placówce edukacji wyższej dla różnych grup społecznych. Historia regulowania dostępu do tego uniwersytetu stanowi przy tym, jak jestem o tym przekonana, znakomitą egzemplifikację dynamiki – mających miejsce w Stanach Zjednoczonych – relacji między równością/nierównością w edukacji, a także opartą na zasadach merytokracji ruchliwością konkurencyjną i ruchliwością sponsorowaną. Decydujące znaczenie mają w tym kontekście kryteria przyjęć. Stanowią one zawsze – zarówno w odniesieniu do Harvardu, jak i większości najlepszych uniwersytetów w skali świata – pewnego typu społeczną konstrukcję. Niezależnie od retoryki ich twórców, tylko pozornie mają one charakter „obiektywny” i zorientowane są na typowo akademickie atrybuty kandydatów. W rzeczywistości przesycone są one różnymi ideologiami, wynikającymi z nich niekiedy w sposób jawny, a niekiedy domyślny czy ukryty. Ich celem jest nie tylko „wychwytywanie” najlepszych kandydatów, ale także – a niekiedy przede wszystkim – regulowanie dostępu do placówek edukacji wyższej, głównie poprzez tworzenie mechanizmów wykluczania.
