Cel – widocznym nurtem w badaniach bibliotekoznawczych oraz praktyce zarządzania bibliotekami w ostatnich latach stała się kwestia oceny efektywności bibliotek i pożytku, jaki daje społeczeństwu ich funkcjonowanie i finansowanie. Niektóre biblioteki, chcąc wykazać się swą efektywnością i przydatnością dla obsługiwanej społeczności, prowadzą same lub zlecają zewnętrznym podmiotom przeprowadzenie analizy zwrotu z inwestowania w bibliotekę. Niektóre z owych analiz zmierzają do wykazania wysokiej stopy zwrotu z takiej inwestycji wyrażonej w jednostkach monetarnych. Artykuł zawiera rozważania na temat potrzeby prowadzenia owych analiz i stosowanych w nich metod. Metody badań – zastosowano metodę analizy piśmiennictwa i analizy źródeł w postaci raportów z analiz zwrotu z inwestowania w biblioteki. Wyniki i wnioski – Analiza zwrotu nakładu z inwestowania w bibliotekę, której efektem jest wyrażanie wartości usług bibliotecznych w jednostkach monetarnych, może budzić kontrowersje. Zwłaszcza, że wielkości niektórych składników w takich analizach wydają się mocno szacunkowe. Mimo tych zastrzeżeń przeliczanie wartości usług bibliotecznych na pieniądze można uznać za dopuszczalny, a niekiedy niezbędny zabieg marketingowy.

Objective – The evaluation of library efficiency and benefits brought by the libraries to the society has become one of visible trends in library management studies in the recent years. Some libraries, interested in proving their efficiency and usefulness to the community they serve, conduct or commission the analyses of return on investment in libraries. Some of these analyses prove the high rate of return on investment expressed with monetary units. The author discusses the need for such analyses and applied methods. Research methods – The author uses the analysis of the literature and reports on return on investment in libraries. Results and conclusions – The analysis of return on investment in libraries the result of which is the value of library services expressed with monetary units may be controversial, in particular as some components in such analyses appear to be considerably approximated. However, despite those objections the calculation of library service value may be considered an acceptable and sometimes even indispensable marketing activity.
