J. Galtung – a renowned Norwegian sociologist and political scientist – is one of most cited authors in publications that are dealing with description of cultural specifics in the area of scientific communication. When talking about differences in writing and speech of representatives of four so-called intellectual styles, Galtung characterises the scientific styles (however, mainly in arts and humanities) in Eastern European countries as staying under the influence of teutonic (i.e. based upon German scientific tradition) intellectual style. This article addresses the following problems: further specification of the term “teutonic intellectual style“ and evaluation of the reasons for inclusion of Polish and Russian scientific style into it; review of some textual characteristics to demonstrate both similarities and differences between German, Polish and Russian publications; identification of those specifics of Polish and Russian scientific styles that cannot be explained through their belonging to the area of influence of teutonic intellectual style.
