The study is an attempt to summarize the current state of research on the history of the Pogórski family of Pogórze and Brenna. The family is considered to be one of the oldest noble houses in Cieszyn Silesia. Several generations of the landowners of Pogórze (and their descendants) have been reconstructed, from the mid-15th century to the early years of the 17 th century. Featured in the article (among others) are: Nicholas the Elder (Mikołaj starszy), Nicholas the Younger (Mikołaj młodszy), Lawrence (Wawrzyniec), Stanislaus (Stanisław), Stephen (Stefan) and Wenceslas (Wacław). The most interesting and most well-documented biographies have been described in detail. An analysis of source material allowed for a verification of a number of widespread false assumptions (such as the thesis about the alleged nobleman, son of Mikołaj of Pogórze – Ernest of Lużnice), as well as for the introduction of some new theories about the family. An attempt was made to correlate data about three Silesian houses which use a common “deer-fish” emblem, depicting a sea monster with the head of a deer and the tail of a fish. Although it was not possible to conclusively prove a close kinship between the Pogórski of Pogórze, Rudzki of Rudz and Saschke of Szonów, this thesis is still considered to be valid and meriting further research, which would enable the verification of proposed thesis – that the origins of the two first families are to be sought in the Saschke family, which might point to their roots in Germany an Oświęcim.
