Wielość koncepcji stanowiących próby delimitacji niepełnosprawności stanowi dowód złożoności tego zjawiska. Już ogólna analiza ewolucji głównych nurtów i wypracowanych modeli uwydatnia zmiany postrzegania niepełnosprawności. Istotnym etapem w tym zakresie jest bogaty w przemiany wiek XX. Dzięki nim każda jednostka zyskała bowiem gwarancję podmiotowości przy jednoczesnym uznaniu możliwej indywidualizacji układu posiadanych cech. W konsekwencji rośnie zapotrzebowanie na tworzenie środowisk, produktów, technologii i usług dostępnych i użytecznych dla „wszystkich”. Powszechna i nieograniczona partycypacja społeczna staje się bowiem jedną z głównych wartości współczesnych społeczeństw. Dążenia te są źródłem idei projektowania uniwersalnego (Universal Design). Artykuł stanowi próbę prezentacji głównych założeń tej koncepcji, która choć powstała w połowie lat osiemdziesiątych XX w., obecnie zdaje się zyskiwać na popularności, stanowiąc w założeniach propozycję praktycznej implementacji dostępności i partycypacji społecznej.

The multiplicity of concepts which attempt to determine the delimitation of disability is evidence of the complexity of this phenomenon. The overall analysis of the evolution of the main streams and developed models highlights the changes in the perception of disability. An important step in this area was the twentieth century which was rich in transitions. Each person has gained the guarantee of subjectivity and individualization of arrangement features that it has. As a result, the demand for the creation of environments, products, technologies and services accessible and useful for “All” is growing. Universal and unlimited social participation is in fact one of the main values of modern societies. These aspirations are the source of the idea of Universal Design. The article attempts to present the main objectives of this concept, which now seems to be gaining in popularity as a proposal of practical implementation for accessibility and social participation.
