The aim of the contribution is pointing to basical forms of poetic transcendence in poetry of key poets within two periods of Slovak Catholic Modernism (Rudolf Dilong, Janko Silan). A starting point for searching is philosophical definition of transcendence (St. Augustine, Friedrich Nietzsche, Maurice Merleau-Ponty) and putting the work of both poets in context of slovak and european modern literature and culture. Interpretation of the poems showed that even if the authors differed in their poetic style, yet they both tried hard to merge horizontal and vertical transcendence. An effort of connection and expression of spiritual dimension in earthly experience can be considered as differentiating mark of modern view on catholicity.
