On the Polish territory, occupied by Austria, the Ukrainian women, members of the Orthodox and Greek Catholic church, often wives and daughters of priests, having sense of cultural bonds with peasant population, speaking Rusynian (Ukrainian), had an influent on national consciousness in 19th century. The role of the woman in the conservative Ukrainian family in Galicia, was traditional. They were prepared to the role of wives, mothers and to taking care of the household. There were not many educated women in Galicia. Women’s movement was developed slowly and was supported first of all by the socialist party and the trade unions. In the end of the 19th century, there were first rallies of the Ukrainian women in Lvov and in the different cities of the Eastern Galicia. The participants of the rallies demanded mainly access to the education. On the beginning of the 20th century, there were an increase of the women’s interest in the economical problems in Galicia. Many women started their career. During the period before the First World War, part of the young Ukrainian women were the activists of the independent movement.
