Gender Discrimination in Household Budgets in South India: A Case Study

The paper analyses the determinants of gender discrimination in the Puducherry regions of the UTP in India. The data being used was collected from a random sample of 300 married female respondents during June August 2008 across these regions. It also examines the socio-economic background of the sample respondents and gender discrimination in household budget expenditure during the survey. Gender discrimination was found to be to be relatively more in rural areas and among females in the study area. Household budget expenditure was observed to be comparatively lower for wives and daughters on most items. Female education and household resource control were found to significantly reduce gender discrimination, while male-child preference significantly increased it. The study recommends effective implementation of female empowerment policies and programs to over-come the problem.
