The author tries to answer a question, weather virtual reality, which was created by modern media, changed the role of upbringing in the contemporary world. She begins with a characterization of educational reality, which is dominated by the presence of modern media to a large degree. She pays attention to the ways of it is perceived – as an upbringing danger, or a new educational chance. Both perspectives have their explanations. She indicates that separation between existence in the real world and in the network gets bigger with the age (there is an evident difference – for the generation of grandparents, it is a convenient help in daily life – for the generation of parents and for teenagers and children a necessary and obvious element in all life’s aspects). The world of today’s pupils is a world in which real and virtual reality penetrate each other and shape one, common area of action, relationship, and create a sense of belonging to the community. It is hard to talk about the need of preparing young generation to the existence in virtual reality. However, like any other civilisation change, this new situation demands educational preparation and protection. Education which fits these needs is education oriented to the personal development. The author suggests that preparing an individual to treat himself/herself and others as persons, to personal overview of his/her own development, to perceiving his/her own place in social communities, and to receive and implement values refers not only to the existence in real world, but also in the virtual one. A sensitive and personally mature person (who mainly respects his/her own and others’ dignity, his/her duties, developmental aims, personal and community values) will want and be able to defend against the manipulation of modern media. He/she will be able to make use of them in a constructive and creative way for him/her and the others.
