The article is based on the funereal correspondence of 1939 related to the death and burial of Jan Gwalbert Pawlikowski. The author’s aim is a semantic and pragmatic analysis of the lexical aspect of the letters, especially the linguistic means of evaluation. This approach, considering the generic conventions of the past, allows to reconstruct the profile of the deceased seen in the light of the social roles he performed.
