The Yezidi sacred hymn Qewlê sibeyek ji yêt E ‘dewîye belongs to the mystical tradition of the people, who for centuries have obeyed the ban on the use of the written word, passing on the most important religious and philosophical contents from generation to generation solely by word of mouth. This is the first publication of this version of the hymn, which consists of 51 stanzas. It was obtained during my field research from the Yezidi cleric Pir Dima. Until now, only a few versions of this hymn were known in the Yezidi-Kurmanji original, but it had never been translated into any language. The translation presented here, prepared in consultation with Pir Dima, is therefore the very first. It is also annotated with numerous explanatory notes on the hermetic language of Yezidi religious poetry, which shares many themes and terms with the early Sufi tradition, particularly on issues of mysticism, asceticism, the relationship between reason and the appetitive part of the soul, and the afterlife.
