W roku 2012 minęła 430. rocznica powołania w Rzymie Kolegium Polskiego. Jego niełatwe początki, które wiążą się z postacią biskupa warmińskiego kardynała Stanisława Hozjusza, ucznia i ideowego spadkobiercy kardynała, dyplomaty i humanisty Stanisława Reszki oraz założyciela kongregacji oratorian świętego Filipa Nereusza, są dosyć słabo znane w literaturze polskiej. Dokumenty zachowane w Archivio della Comunità Oratoriana w Neapolu przebadane dokładnie przez Mario Borelli, przynoszą wiele cennych informacji na temat organizacji instytucji i jej pierwszej siedziby, grona nauczycielskiego, programu nauczania oraz wychowanków. Mimo, że po zaledwie czteroletnim okresie istnienia seminarium, ze względów finansowych musiano je rozwiązać, sam fakt powstania i działalności instytucji o charakterze narodowym, wpisującej się w mozaikę kulturową Wiecznego Miasta drugiej połowy XVI w. zasługuje na szczególną uwagę i pamięć.

The circumstances under which the Polish College, nowadays known as the Pontificium Collegium Polonorum, was established in 1582 in Rome are rather little known when it comes to Polish native historiography. The beginnings of the institution are connected with the figure of the eminent diplomat, humanist and follower of Cardinal Hosius - the priest Stanislaw Reszka (1544-1600) and with the activity of the Congregation of the Oratory, including its founder Saint Philip Neri and his helper Father Antonio Talpa. Thanks to the research which Mario Borelli conducted in the Archivio della Comunità Oratoriana in Naples, we actually know some more details such as how the college was established and how it functioned, including its official seat, first rector and lecturers, its program of studies (curriculum), the number and nationalities of its students, expenses connected with the maintenance of the seminary. Despite the endeavours undertaken by the Oratorians anth extensive propaganda campaign which was organized by Reszka for the benefit of the college, while in Poland also, among the friendly dignitaries, the institution was forced to suspend its activity in 1586.

Die Umstände, unter denen das Polnische Kolleg, heute als Pontificium Collegium Polonorum bekannt, im Jahr 1582 in Rom gegründet wurde, sind eher wenig bekannt, wenn es um einheimische polnische Geschichtsschreibung kommt. Die Anfänge der Institution wurden mit dem Gestalt des herausragenden Diplomat und Humanist, Nachfolger von Kardinal Stanislaus Hosius, Stanisław Reszka (1544-1600) verbunden und mit der Tätigkeit der Kongregation des Oratoriums einschließlich ihres Gründers - des heiligen Philipp Neri und seines Assistenten Antonio Talpa. Dank der im Archivio della Comunità Oratoriana in Neapel durchgeführten Forschungen von Mario Borelli wissen wir nun etwas mehr darüber, wie das Kolleg gegründet wurde und wie es funktionierte, auch über offiziellen Sitz des Kollegs, ersten Rektor und Dozenten, den Lehrplan, die Anzahl und Nationalität der Studierenden und schließlich über Aufwendungen, die mit der Aufrechterhaltung des Kollegs verbunden waren. Trotz der Bemühungen von Oratorianer und der umfangreichen Propaganda-Kampagne, die von Reszka zum Wohle des Kollegs organisiert und auch in Polen unter den befreundeten hohen Würdenträgern der Kirche und den Laien durchgeführt wurde, war die Institution gezwungen, ihre Tätigkeit im Jahr 1586 auszusetzen.
