The author presents issues connected with research concerning effective methods of securing monuments made of diagnesis limestone, known as “royal marble”. The threat to ferruginous limestone in the conditions of lengthy internal and external exposition is obvious. An unhampered penetration of condensation or rainfall moisture into the interior of the limestone leads to a loosening of the endogenuous cohesion of the rock along the borderline of phases, and to permanent damage. Conservation problems are the outcome of processes of weathering and the dymorphic nature of inner construction. It becomes necessary to render the disintegrated structure whole. This process is accomplished in two stages by means of consolidation and defragmentation, i. e. the integration of the reinforced details into the original form. The selection of the reinforcing imprégnants depends on the possibility of using individual features of mineral patency. Proofing with synthetic resin solutions used at present in conservation contains the risk of closing the natural dilatancy system of the stone. An analysis of the effectiveness of the proofing applied for the conservation of monuments made of royal marble made it possible to define the positive and negative features of certain preparations. The slight absorbing capacity of the rock and the properties of the used chemical preparations are the reason why the proofing is limited to the surface. These restrains are the outcome o f the considerable viscosity of the solutions and the conventional methods of application.
