Intercultural Competences and Identity. Analysis Using the Example of Migrating Students from Silesia

The aim the article is to analyse the process of gaining intercultural competence and the importance of an individual’s identity in this process. The first part brings a definition of the notions of competence and intercultural competences and a proposition of a theoretical model for this process, with regard to the impact of an individual’s identity. The second part is dedicated to the results of the author’s research, carried out among students and university graduates migrating from Silesia and taking into account issues such as: an individual’s identity, awareness of the existence of cultural differences, awareness of the existence of stereotypes, methods of preparing oneself for contact with foreigners, scope of knowledge of other cultures, and attitudes towards intercultural contact.
