The elaboration tackles the most important linguistic problems concerning the issue of standardizing geographical names beyond Polish borders. The article calls to mind the basic definitions of terms used during standardization (standardization of geographical names, national and international standardization, exonym, endonym, allonym etc.) and enumerates basic publications containing standardized worldwide geographical names. It also points to differences between the standardized and onomastic terminology, by focusing on terms such as: native name, foreign name and borrowing. The author enumerates elaborations containing geographical names coming from around the world. A new research program concerning historical exonyms has been mentioned, and normative rules applying to the adaptation of foreign names and their transcription and transliteration have been highlighted.
