La senilità è stata considerata per molto tempo sinonimo di saggezza, ma la condizione degli anziani sembra essere percepita diversamente nella società liquida. Le cause di questo cambiamento sono dovute alla situazione paradossale in cui oggi vivono gli anziani. Da un lato, l'aspettativa di vita è aumentata notevolmente negli ultimi decenni e la condizione economica dei pensionati è migliorata; dall'altro, le nuove malattie che affliggono gli anziani hanno messo in dubbio il rapporto tra senilità e saggezza, mentre i costi del sistema pensionistico, a causa della crisi economica, appaiono oggi insostenibili persino nei Paesi avanzati,. La situazione degli anziani diviene, dunque, un esempio significativo della condizione esistenziale tipica del nostro tempo. Una visione della vita intesa come “progetto” genera sofferenza e frustrazione, fattoriche trovano espressione nell'ansia e nella depressione, disturbi tanto diffusi ai giorni nostri, particolarmente tra gli anziani. Soltanto il recupero di una visione autentica della saggezza e della trascendenza potrebbe aiutare a superare queste contraddizioni sociali e culturali.

Senility has been considered synonymous with wisdom for a long time, but the condition of the elderly seems to be perceived otherwise in a liquid society. The causes of this change are due to the paradoxical situation in which the elderly live today. On the one hand, life expectancy has lengthened greatly in recent decades and the economic condition of pensioners has improved; on the other hand, the new diseases that affect the elderly have questioned the equation between senility and wisdom, while the costs of the pension system seem nowadays unsustainable even in advanced countries due to the economic crisis. The situation of the elderly becomes, then, a significant example of the existential condition typical of our time. A vision of life as a “project” generates suffering and frustration which are expressed in anxiety and depression, so widespread in our times, particularly among old people. Only the recovery of an authentic vision of wisdom and transcendence could help to overcome these social and cultural contradictions.
